§ 114-526. Statement of policy.

Latest version.
  • (a)

Progressive discipline. It is the policy of the city to impose, where reasonable, progressive discipline according to procedures that are fair, prompt and appropriate to the situation. However, when an infraction is such as to impair or destroy the future effective performance of the employee or when the employee's presence impairs the effectiveness of others or presents danger to the employee, others or city property, action shall be taken to immediately remove the employee from the work environment. The city supports a process in which disciplinary action is applied in several steps of increasing severity. The usual sequence of progressive discipline is oral admonishment, written reprimand, suspension and dismissal. The progressive disciplinary process affords the employee the opportunity to correct behavior or inadequate job performance with the minimum level of discipline applied at each step.

    (b)

Authority of fire chief and police chief. Notwithstanding anything in this division to the contrary, the fire chief and police chief shall retain authority to administer corrective and disciplinary action, to formulate rules and regulations for the operation of their departments and such other powers and responsibilities as are provided by ordinance.
